RANA | GORGANI
My first exposure to Rana Gorgani live show has been a revelation.
She has been on my Facebook feed for quiet a while, I kept watching her work with brilliant photographer from all over the planet, and I was very curious if she would accept a collaboration with me.
I eventually got in contact, we had some time to talk and she offered to come by a live event she was doing a couple weeks ago. the only thing she mentioned was that the venue didn’t want any publicity, they usually dont accept being tagged on social media and this kind of stuff. Therefore I had to go thru a pictures selection program by the venue’s artistic director, she picked some of the pictures I sent and decline some other’s as well. It was kinda frustrating that for example 3 of my fav’ pics were declined but at least the rules were set BEFORE I shot the event.
The place was packed, and I mean there was no room for me to move at all. I had to go to my seat (well there was no seat, I was standing on a corner) about 45 mins before the event in order to make sure I could get in.
I stayed there for a while, trying to see how the lighting will go, trying to figure out which angles and how wide I could go with either the 2 lenses I picked for the job.
- Pentax D-FA 24-70mm /f2.8
- Pentax D-FA* 70-200mm /f2.8
At that time I didn’t had my 50mm /f1.7 yet, too bad as it would have been of great help.
When the show started, Rana Gorgani was standing under a very dimmed light. A white subtle light focused on her was the only light available beside the light on the musicians.
For the whole performance I was hoping for some proper light but that never happened. This show took place under the darkest environment ever !
I agree it was part of the vibe there, but it took me a few mins to understand.
I started shooting at ISO5000 and as fast as 1/250 when I wanted to freeze her movement (tried some low speed shots @1/80), but I slowly cranked the ISO up to ISO16000!
A world premiere for my Pentax K-1 Camera and myself!
Here is a shot taken with the D-FA* lens at ISO16000 and 1/200 sec:

Quality is pretty good if you ask me, the Pentax K-1 Camera is really shining in low light conditions and one of the main reasons I stay a Pentax Fan all thru theses years.
EXPERIENCE DERVICHE
The live event was announced as “A Rana Gorgani recital, with original music created by Lico Nishimoto with special guest Simon Graichy”.
This would make for an incredible mix of visual and auditive delight for the audience!
