A Living Heritage

To photograph Subhan Ahmed Nizami is to witness eight centuries of uninterrupted musical history. As the leader of the Qawwal Baché ensemble, Nizami is the direct heir to the Delhi Gharana, the oldest school of Qawwali, established in the 13th century by the legendary saint and poet Amir Khusrau. In the sacred landscape of Sufi music, the "Qawwal Baché" (the Children of the Qawwals) are the original keepers of the flame, entrusted with the task of preserving the repertoire and the specific vocal techniques born in the imperial courts of Delhi.
